Repairing my fridge

I have a fridge I bought in 2009. In the door, there is a tray that holds heavy items like yoghurt cartons. That tray was held up with two tiny tabs on each side, which fall in a slot in the side of the tray. In 2013, those tabs broke off, which rendered the tray unusable. This means I had to put those cartons in the fridge proper, blocking access to the vegetable drawer (I had to remove all the cartons to access it) and making access to the bottom shelf more cumbersome.

This is annoying.

In 2013, I repaired this by heating up four M6 bolts and pushing them in the styrene insulation in the door. The heads of the bolt just fit the slot in the side of the tray. Because the bolts didn’t go trough all they way, they didn’t form a heat bridge.

To my great surprise, this solution held up until the end of 2020 (over 7 year, almost double how long the original tabs held up). But now I was back to having no easy access to my vegetable drawer. I tried a little more high-tech approach.

My friend [Knarf] has a 3D printer, so I whipped up OpenSCAD and designed a tab to fit in the side of the tray.

I actually had [Knarf] make a test print, which was too tight. I then adapted the model but I made an error because instead of making it 0.1mm narrower, I made it wider, now it was too tight. But I was a bit fed up with my fridge and [Knarf] had already made a few failed prints (because his room was too cold — don’t print in a cold wave if your hous isn’t insulated good enough), so I decided to make it fit the old-fashioned way.

I took two files and filed the tabs down until they fit. It ain’t pretty and I actually went trough the outer layer of one of the tabs, but this wasn’t a problem as it was on the top front, the least load-bearing part.

The next problem was how to fix this to the fridge. I had some epoxy glue. Ideally, you need to clamp things after glueing, but my new “tabs” sat on the outer flange which was tapered on two sides. Meaning that whatever edge I tried to clamp it, either the tab itself shifted forward or the weight of the clamp made it shift. My (non-ideal) solution was to use manual clamping force for the required 5 minutes after which it should’ve been fixated (according to the packaging).

Unfortunately, the glue gun’s “mixer” didn’t have a very good attachment, so more glue came out on the side than on the business end, and of course not always on the newspaper I had put down as a precaution… But after some hasty cleaning-up and use of proper expletives, the tabs seemed to be fixed.

After 6 hours (when the epoxy was fully hardened), I tried and to my joy, the tray fit! I could now put everything back in the tray in the door and can easily access the bottom shelf and vegetable tray!
I also cleaned the fridge in the meantime — which I had put off for a while because I wanted to do it at the same time as this repair.

I’m really curious how long this will hold out, the 3d print is quite brittle and I guess the cold won’t help, but we’ll see.

  1. You used one very special tool, and I’m really curious about it’s details: which expletives worked best? Do you store them in your toolkit or somewhere else? Where can you buy them or did you borrow them? Do you need to clean them after use???

    1. The ones with a lot of rolling R’s work the best. Cleaning not necessary, but make sure you’ll use them regularly. And I always keep them closeby, ready to use, so I don’t have a special toolbox 😉

      1. Rolling R, presumably at the end of the word? Makes sense! Sounds like energy from an extra power pack!!
